Project Summary
The Purdue Ionomics Information Management System (PiiMS) is a laboratory information management system for a high through-put bioinformatics laboratory at the
Purdue University campus that assists researchers manage, analyze, and disseminate experimental data generated by the laboratory. The infrastructure of PiiMS is currently
based in WebSphere Portal Server as a collection of over 30 individual portlets to model the experimental workflow, perform catalogue and inventory management operations,
and perform data search and visualization operations.

Project Goals
- Leading to mineral-efficient plants that need little fertilizer, crops with better nutritional value for humans and plants that may remove contamination from the soil
- Understand how plants take up, transport and store nutrients and toxic elements
Challenges
- Support the entire experimental and analysis process through a Web-based portal
- Enable integrated high throughput experimentation and data analysis
- Technical expansion and adaptation of the system in response to advances and changes in the laboratory
